Jet2 flight delay and cancellation compensation: how to claim
If a Jet2 flight reached its destination three hours or more late, or was cancelled with less than 14 days' notice, and the cause was not an extraordinary circumstance, Jet2 owes you £220, £350 or £520 per passenger. Jet2 has an online claim form on its delays and cancellations page. It aims to contact you within 28 days and asks you to claim directly with it first.
Which Jet2 flights are covered
Jet2 is a UK airline, so every flight it operates to or from the UK is covered. UK261 applies to flights leaving a UK airport and to flights arriving in the UK. EU261 applies when the flight leaves an EU airport, for example a Jet2 flight home from Spain.
Jet2.com operates the flights on Jet2holidays packages. If you booked a package, you claim from the airline, Jet2, and not from the holiday company.
For a delay, Jet2 says the arrival delay counts, not the departure delay. You need to have reached your final destination three hours or more after the scheduled arrival time.
How much Jet2 pays
The amount depends on the distance of the flight. It is paid per passenger, including children with a paid seat. Infants travelling free are excluded.
| Band | Compensation | Example on Jet2 |
|---|---|---|
| Up to 1,500 km | £220 | Manchester to Jersey |
| 1,500 to 3,500 km | £350 | Leeds Bradford to Alicante, Manchester to Tenerife |
| Over 3,500 km | £520 | Any Jet2 flight over 3,500 km |
On a flight over 3,500 km the amount is £260 instead of £520 if you arrived less than 4 hours late. For flights covered by EU261 the amounts are €250, €400 and €600.
How to claim from Jet2
- Gather your details. You need the booking reference, flight number, date, boarding passes and any reason Jet2 gave for the disruption.
- Use the online form. Go to Jet2's delays and cancellations page and choose "Submit a claim".
- Claim for others only with permission. You can claim for people on the same booking reference. For anyone outside your family group you need their signed permission.
- Allow time for a reply. Jet2 says it aims to contact you within 28 days. It also asks you to claim directly and allow time before using a third party.
- Or write to Jet2. The postal address is EU261 Team, PO Box 284, Leeds LS11 1GE. Include the same details as the online form.
You have 6 years from the date of the flight to claim in England, Wales and Northern Ireland, or 5 years in Scotland. Meals, a hotel and transport are owed whatever the cause, so keep receipts.
If Jet2 says no
Jet2 must prove that an extraordinary circumstance caused the problem. It lists these as extraordinary: air traffic control restrictions, adverse weather, disruptive passengers, medical emergencies, foreign object damage, bird or lightning strike, and airport or runway closures.
These are not accepted as extraordinary:
- Technical faults that arise from the normal operation of an aircraft. This was decided against Jet2 in Huzar v Jet2.com [2014] EWCA Civ 791.
- Crew sickness, including the captain (Lipton v BA CityFlyer [2024] UKSC 24).
- The airline's own staff striking (Krüsemann, 2018).
- Crew out of hours, crew shortages and rostering, and knock-on delay from the airline's own earlier problem.
- "Operational reasons" with no further explanation.
Jet2 is not in the CAA's list of approved dispute bodies. Jet2's own page says to appeal to the CAA's Passenger Advice and Complaints Team (PACT). PACT is free, but it cannot make a binding decision.
For flights that left Spain, you can instead appeal to AESA, the Spanish aviation authority. Its decision is binding on the airline, and you must appeal within 1 year.
The other route is the county court. In England and Wales that is Money Claim Online, on the small claims track for claims up to £10,000. The fee is £35 for a claim up to £300 and £115 for a claim of £1,500.01 to £3,000, with bands in between. You can claim the fee back if you win. In Scotland you use the Simple Procedure.
Not sure whether your flight qualifies?
Check your flightFree to check. If a claim company takes the case it keeps 35% of the payout, VAT included, and nothing if the claim fails. You can also claim it yourself for free.
Claiming yourself or using a company
Claiming yourself is free, and Jet2's form is open to every passenger. The step-by-step guide to claiming yourself covers the evidence, the wording and the time limits.
A claim company is paid out of your compensation. The comparison of claim companies shows each company's published fee, so you can see what you would keep.
Jet2 questions
Can I claim for other people on my booking?
You can claim for people on the same booking reference. If they are outside your family group, you need their signed permission. People on a different booking reference need to claim separately.
What if my flight left from Spain?
EU261 applies to any flight leaving an EU airport. The amounts are €250, €400 and €600. If Jet2 refuses, you can appeal to AESA within 1 year, and its decision binds the airline.
I booked a Jet2holidays package. Who do I claim from?
Claim from Jet2.com, the airline that operated the flight. The holiday company is not the party that owes flight compensation.
Does the delay count from take-off or from landing?
From landing. Jet2 says the arrival delay counts, not the departure delay. The clock stops when at least one aircraft door opens.
Should I use a claim company straight away?
Jet2 asks you to claim directly first and allow time before using a third party. Claiming yourself costs nothing, and a company would take a share of what you are owed.
